The increase amount of waste daily in Malaysia has created unpleasant views of overflowed waste at the landfill. Most of this waste decomposes naturally to release greenhouse gases that make the world hotter. Introduction of the 5R campaign, especially recycling, has been seen as an alternatively effective way to reduce conventional waste disposal that can save material and help lower greenhouse gas emissions. However, in Malaysia, the level of awareness on recycling is still low. Even though clear rules and procedures are given, people may just throw the waste without considering the bin’s colour or type of waste. This causes time and energy consuming of workers to separate again the recycle trash before the process of disposal.The product of this innovation is Intelligent Smart Bin or shortly known as I-SMART BIN. I-SMART BIN is a prototype of a low cost, energy efficient recycle bin powered by Arduino microcontroller and sensors that able to track and separate trash material such metals, plastics, paper and food waste accordingly. I-SMART BIN which is made up of 4 compartments, uses different sensors to detect different types of material. Each recycle bin is designed with an auto open and close door concept. Once the materials is detected, the servo motor sense items and the bin door open and close within predefined time. The sensitivity and efficiency of the recycle bin is tested using 20 different trash to calculate percentage of error. The outcomes show I-SMART BIN can sort waste successfully, especially plastic and metal.
